My lap dog

This old golden sleeps and soon leaps.

Does my friend know his strength,

have an idea of his own length?

(What of his weight and that sideway gait?)

My golden recalls dives from rock ledges,

and still jumps on armchairs, laps, and couches —

seventy pounds of orange and goodness, and the best of simple wishes.
