Near the end of the year, I finished a narration

By recording the closing credit: simply “the end”

Then the middleman offered a much longer book

And wanted to pay me proportionally less

But soon agreed to raise the compensation

Aha OK, but I needed to size up the book before agreeing to it — a detail that wasn’t taught at middleman school

I pulled out after skimming it — a pornographic romp in fits and fizzles through southern cities

“But he likes your voice,” plus cooked-up blandishments

And I had a professional’s choice

After all, his story is lost out there in the ever-bulging Amazon inventory

And elsewhere you’ll find my résumé and voice print in greater circulation

I can’t hide under a pseudonym, but authors can sacrifice excess.
